Oregon Health Insurance
The Oregon Medical Insurance Pool (OMIP) is a high risk health insurance pool for residents of the state. The pool was created by the Legislature of Oregon to provide coverage for adults and children. These adults and children otherwise would be unable to obtain medical insurance because of health conditions. If you have exhausted Cobra coverage, OMIP also provides a way to continue your health benefits.
The Oregon Medical Insurance Pool (OMIP) provides health insurance benefits to all residents of the state who are unable to obtain benefits due to serious health conditions. The program also provides portability for your health insurance coverage to Oregonians who have exhausted COBRA benefits and have no other options. The program includes four PPO plans with different co insurances, deductibles, and maximum out of pocket expense limitations.
The Oregon Medical Insurance Pool was established in 1987 by the Legislature. OMIP insures more than 35,000 residents who would otherwise be without health insurance. The administrator for these plans are Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oregon.
Premiums collected for OMIP actually only cover 50 percent of the claim costs of the program. Commercial insurance carriers in the state pay a special fee to OMIP. This special fee covers the remaining percentage.
Enrollees in an OMIP Plan must have the financial resources available to pay the premiums. Premiums are not subsidized and are also not reduced on the inability to pay. A program called the Family Health Insurance Assistance Program or FHIAP, may pay a premium subsidy for OMIP if you qualify.
