A major advantage to this health insurance plan is there is only one deductible, which covers all medical costs. Once the deductible is met, we pay nothing for anything else for the rest of the year. With this plan, we know how much we are going to pay long before we even go to the hospital or doctor’s office, as long as we take the time to do the math or contact a customer service agent to ensure that a visit or procedure will be covered. On that note, our plan’s customer service is straightforward and I have never had to wait for a telephone representative. Many doctors and practices are covered under our plan; it would be difficult to even find a healthcare professional who would be considered out-of-network.
The plan embodies a high deductible, which could become overwhelming on a lower-middle class salary should there be an emergency. The premium cost per person is high, over one-fifth of my husband’s monthly salary. While we are grateful to have insurance coverage should we need a medical procedure or a yearly check-up, our dream of one day owning a home will never come to fruition while we pay this high premium and deductible.
Overall, we are satisfied with the plan. In fact, I just went to the doctor for a yearly check-up yesterday. After calling Anthem to make sure that my doctor is still covered, I went to the office, signed in, was not required to make a co-pay, and waited for my turn to see the doctor. I expect a statement of benefits from Anthem California in about three weeks, and around one week after that, I will receive my doctor’s bill; the cost of the visit will be no surprise.
